Offered at our Mt. Airy campus, the Parents & Tots program provides an opportunity for young children and their parents or caregivers to come together in a warm and nurturing environment where children are introduced to their first school experience. With a thoughtful and gentle structure and rhythm, the foundation for a life-long love of learning is fostered, a natural stepping stone to our child-only Nursery program.
Our experienced and trained Parents & Tots teacher leads the class in a Circle Time of seasonal games and songs and brings storytelling through puppetry. As the children engage in Free Play with imagination-inspiring Waldorf toys and tools, parents and caregivers observe the children in a social group of peers. As the children work and play together, the adults engage in and model the “work” for the classroom: helping to prepare the delicious and healthy morning snack, creating toys and making seasonal crafts for the home as well as taking a part in guided discussions of each session’s class book on parenting and child development.
An appreciation of the child’s natural capacity for imaginative play and the world of nature sets a mood of wonder, reverence, and enthusiasm for the tasks at hand. These activities develop the building blocks for future intellectual growth through Language Arts, Mathematics, Artistic Practice, Social Skills and Good Work Habits.

During Thanksgiving dinner the year that I began Parents and Tots with my son, then two, I remember thinking that Waldorf was what I was most thankful for that holiday. P&T provided me with a community of parents that shared my values and goals for my child. It taught me how to create a home-life that nurtured my child and myself. It taught me the importance of healthy play and how to foster it. Now my son is in the third grade at our school and I continue to learn and develop right alongside him. I have a school family that supports and stimulates my growth as a person as well as my son’s. I find the curriculum intellectually engaging and the methodology continues to push my assumptions about convention. My son’s comprehension of literature and his vocabulary are astounding, recently tested to be at the eighth-grade level. The school’s commitment to social health creates a cooperative and loving environment that goes beyond the classroom to play-dates and sleepovers. I have never seen boys treat each other with the level of kindness and care that these boys do when they get together outside of school.
